A foundational programme in the Humanities since 1967 — patient with the long view, attentive to the local, and committed to a pupil-centric approach to the past.
The Department of History was established in 1967 as one of the foundational programmes in the Humanities at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College.
The Department offers History & Culture of Punjab as a compulsory subject, History as an elective, and an Honours track for students opting for deeper specialisation. Across these courses, the curriculum moves from ancient through medieval to modern Indian history, with sustained attention to Punjab in particular.
The faculty follows a pupil-centric approach to teaching, enriching the learning process by engaging students in community-oriented programmes alongside formal classroom instruction. This makes for a department that takes seriously both the discipline of history and its public uses.
Dr Amandeep Kohri has been honoured for social work and the promotion of a culture of peace by the Regional Centre of NSS and Srijan Peace Education Centre.
She is also a professional guide accredited by the Department of Tourism, Government of Punjab — extending the work of the historian into public-facing engagement with the past.
