Programme Outcomes & Course Outcomes

PO · PSO · CO

What every student of SGGS will know, do and value

In line with the National Education Policy and NAAC's outcome-based education framework, every programme at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College has clearly articulated Programme Outcomes (POs), Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs), and Course Outcomes (COs) — the knowledge, skills and values a student will demonstrate on successful completion of the programme and each constituent course.

Download the full document — Programme Outcomes & Course Outcomes for all UG and PG programmes are compiled in a single PDF. Programme & Course Outcomes (PDF).
The Three Layers

PO · PSO · CO — what each means

Programme Outcomes (POs)

The broad attributes a graduate of any programme at the College will demonstrate — disciplinary knowledge, critical thinking, communication skills, ethical awareness, teamwork, and self-directed learning.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

The specialised competencies unique to each programme — what a BSc (Hons) Biotechnology graduate, MA Economics graduate, or M.Com. graduate will know and be able to do in their specific field.

Course Outcomes (COs)

Course-by-course, semester-by-semester learning outcomes for every paper offered — so students and faculty can see exactly what each unit of study aims to achieve.

A worked example of Programme Outcomes

To give a sense of how the document is structured, the Programme Outcomes for B.Sc. Biotechnology (Hons.) are reproduced below. The full document includes the PSOs, course outcomes for every semester, and the equivalents for all other programmes.

After successful completion of B.Sc. Biotechnology (Hons.), a student will:

PO 1 · Theory & Practice

Understand and integrate theoretical and practical skills in basic and applied disciplines of Biotechnology.

PO 2 · Disciplinary Knowledge

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of one or more disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, etc., that form a part of an undergraduate programme of study.

PO 3 · Employability

Be proficient enough to take employment in diverse areas of Biotechnology, as well as for further higher studies.

PO 4 · Competent Biotechnologist

Become a competent Biotechnologist who can employ and implement their knowledge base in processes and applications across agriculture, industry, healthcare and the restoration of degraded environment — eligible for jobs across pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry sectors.

PO 5 · Analytical Reasoning

Learn to analyse, interpret and draw conclusions from quantitative / qualitative data; critically evaluate ideas, evidence and experiences from an open-minded and reasoned perspective. B.Sc. students undergo training in a research institute lab, which helps in developing scientific temper.

PO 6 · Research Skills

Develop research-related skills — a sense of inquiry, the ability to ask relevant questions, define problems, formulate and test hypotheses, analyse data, and report the results of an experiment or investigation.

PO 7 · Moral & Ethical Awareness

Avoid unethical behaviour such as fabrication, falsification or misrepresentation of data, or plagiarism — particularly while compiling summer training report files. Environment education and related activities build appreciation of environmental and sustainability issues.

PO 8 · Independent Work

Work independently, identify appropriate resources for a project, and manage a project through to completion. Practical training and graduate-level project work support self-directed learning.

PO 9 · Teamwork

Work effectively and respectfully with diverse teams; act together as a group in the interests of a common cause and contribute as an effective member of a team.

PO 10 · ICT & Information Use

Use ICT in a variety of learning situations; access, evaluate and use a variety of relevant information sources; and use appropriate software for analysis of data.

PO 11 · Communication

Express thoughts and ideas effectively in writing and orally; develop the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.

Why Outcome-Based Education?

A framework for transparent learning

Outcome-based education shifts the question from "what topics will the syllabus cover?" to "what will the student be able to do at the end of this course?" This shift is central to the National Education Policy 2020 and to NAAC's accreditation framework.

For students, having clearly stated outcomes means knowing exactly what to expect from each programme, semester and paper — and what skills, knowledge, and values to demonstrate by the time the degree is awarded. For faculty, it provides a clear basis for designing teaching, assessment and feedback. For employers, recruiters and PG admissions committees, it offers a transparent statement of what an SGGS graduate brings to the table.

Questions or Feedback?

For any question on a specific programme's outcomes, please contact the relevant department head or the IQAC Cell at principal.sggs26@gmail.com. Feedback from students, alumni, parents and employers helps us refine the outcomes from year to year.
