01 — On the Department

Six decades among plants & their study.

The Department of Botany was established in 1966, and has since served as the College's quiet centre for plant science. Its current offering is a three-year undergraduate programme in which Botany is read as one of the elective subjects — alongside Chemistry, Zoology, or Biotechnology — within a Bachelor of Science taught under the semester system.

The discipline, as practised here, is observational and patient. Students learn the architecture of algae, fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms; they handle specimens, draw structures, and read tissue under the microscope. The department maintains a herbarium of dried specimens, two well-equipped laboratories, and a botanical garden — instruments and habitats that together form the working environment of the working botanist.

For students of any stream — undergraduate or postgraduate — the department also offers a one-year Certificate Course in Floriculture and Landscaping, an applied programme in the cultivation of ornamental plants and the design of green spaces.
